Present environmental threats have led to the use of organic ways of producing crops. Organic food items are the ones that are grown without the use of any harmful pesticides, chemical toxins, synthetic fertilizers, etc. Organic food has become the need of the hour as these food items are not only beneficial for consumers but for environment as well. This farming technique focuses on environment sustainability, enhanced use of renewable sources, conservation of water and soil for future use, etc. Since organic farming has so many benefits related to it still farmers employ traditional industrial farming techniques due to some cons associated with this framing technique. The pros and cons of organic farming are listed below:

  • As food grown through organic techniques are high on nutrition as compared to food grown through conventional methods, consumers get all needed minerals and vitamins.
  • Conventional methods of food production make use of harmful chemicals, fertilizers, and pesticides that make one more prone to diseases. Organic farming does not need these toxins and chemicals thus consumers are at reduced risk of potential threats that these chemicals present.
  • Organic food is easy to preserve as it is grown with natural ways. It remains fresh for long.

  • Weed competitiveness increases with organic food producing techniques.
  • As there is no requirement of costly fertilizers and insecticides in organic farming, thus there is a significant reduction in total investment cost.
  • Organically grown plant are more resistant to natural calamities such as drought.
  • As the demand of organic food is increasing day-by-day, the farmers get good costs for their produce. 

 
Environment Benefits:

  • No use of artificial fertilizers in organic crops leads to fewer release of carbon dioxide.
  • Water retention capability and structure of soil improve through the use of green fertilizers in organic farming methods. 
  • The risk of eutrophication reduces as natural farming techniques make less use of nitrogen fertilizers.
  • Cons:
  • The price of organic food is the major disadvantage. Going organic is really expensive.
  • The productivity of organic crops is very low as compared to the requirement. Although efforts have been made to reduce this difference, but it will take time.
  • Organic farming requires high labor input and that too highly skilled. It required intensive labor involvement.
  • The production of organic crops is not at all easy, and it is a time taking process.
