Overpopulation refers to a situation wherein the total population of a particular area exceeds its carrying capacity. Overpopulation does not only result in shortage of living area but of resources as well. It is a worldwide problem as it results in various social, economic, and environmental issues. Today, the world population has reached up to figure of 6.2 billion. The rapid increase in the population, during the last two centuries, has been a result of low mortality rates due to improved medical facilities and substantial increase in agricultural produce. Today, the planet is under threat of various global issues, and in one way or the other, these issues are linked to increasing population.
The rate of population has been increasing at an alarming rate and if the trend continues, we can expect a situation where there will not be enough resources to sustain human life. Deforestation, global warming, pollution, bad health, all these problems have resulted because of unregulated population. Some developing countries do not have enough food to support their increasing population that ultimately results in death. An estimate reveals that around 40K children die every year because of malnutrition or other related illness.
Water scarcity due to overpopulation is another global issue. Fall in water level due to more consumption and natural calamities such as drought resulted in water scarcity. Water is essential for life as no one can live without it. Increased population needs more land for living due to which agriculture lands are reducing as they are converting into cities. It is ultimately resulting in shortage of crops and food which if not stopped now will turn up things very badly.
Other than the shrinkage in natural resources, environmental problems such as pollution and global warming becomes evident due to overpopulation. Pollution is a major cause of certain life taking diseases. Industrialization is also an important factor contributing to pollution. Deforestation is increasing at a faster rate as more land is required for human existence. It results in sudden weather changes and natural calamities such as less rainfall.
Unemployment and waste management are some other issues evolved due to overpopulation. It`s really very hard to provide job to such a huge population. More individuals produce more waste and to find new areas for dumping, is quite difficult. Open garbage leads to air pollution that affects the environment and health of local residents.
Well, the matter needs a lot of considerations, and success cannot be achieved until and unless every single individual contributes. Education is the major step that can help a lot in facing this crisis. If people get basic education, they can understand the ill effects of overpopulation easily and can implement family planning that reduces population. Family planning is another important step towards reducing the population. Adequate knowledge of contraceptives and other techniques provided by government to young couples is a very good step to reduce population. Some other ways of reducing population are incorporating sex education in school and healthcare.
