Surgery is the operation that is done manually by a surgeon on a living body when there is any injury or some problem in the body. Amongst so many types of surgeries, there is one surgery which is not so commonly heard about but is a very important kind of surgery. It is known as tonsil surgery which is basically an operation of the tonsils. Tonsils and tonsillitis are the most commonly heard about words. Tonsils are a part of our body which are clumps of tissue located on both the sides of the throat. Tonsil plays a major role in the human body.

They function in trapping the bacteria and viruses that enter inside the throat. The tonsils produce antibodies to fight against these invading microorganisms which have a tendency to produce infections in the body. Tonsillitis is the infection that hits the tonsils. During this time the tonsils swell up and appear red. These may at times even have a white or a yellowish coating. In severe cases of tonsillitis, tonsil surgery is recommended. The symptoms of tonsillitis include sore throat, discomfort or pain while swallowing. The symptoms may even be accompanied by fever, neck with swollen glands which occurs due to the swelling up of the lymph nodes.

The problem of tonsillitis is mainly observed in the kids. There are chances that over a period of time they may become normal on its own, but it is always advisable that you consult a doctor. If there are recurrence of tonsil infections and sore throats one must visit the doctor for diagnosis. But it does not always mean that checking the tonsillitis problem with a doctor will mean a tonsil operation. One might just have to go through a throat culture. The tonsil surgery is known as tonsillectomy, where the infected tonsils are removed after operating on it. However, a surgery of the tonsils is only advisable when there is persistent tonsillitis or what the doctors calls as strep infections. One might also need a surgery when the tonsils are swollen tonsils and there is breathing problem as well as difficulty in eating hard foods. A typical snoring that interferes with the daily activities of the child may also be a concern. One of the severe cases where it might be necessary for a tonsil surgery is obstructive sleep apnea.

The tonsil surgery is a major surgery of the human body. During the procedure of a tonsillectomy, in the first step the patient is given general anesthesia and will be slept for 20 minutes. Then the surgeon will operate with one of the ways of removing the tonsils, depending on the stage of the infection. For these a number of incisions are employed and on completion any bleeding is stopped.
