Skin, our largest organ is always under attack. Here`s a checklist of the criminals that cause havoc with our skin.
Free radicals: These are free floating reactive electrons that hasten the aging process of the skin. They are formed due to oxidation in the air of the air particles. In extreme cases these free radicals have been known to cause damage to our DNA makeup as well. The free radicals are the biggest reason for skin cancer.
Fight this: With a daily dose of antioxidants like Vitamin C, E and A.
Pollution: For the city woman pollution is an unavoidable skin bane that we have to learn to live and fight with. The excessive dust and fumes from the cars can help bacteria settle on our skin leading to acne and pimples. Invisible chemical pollutants can also interfere with our skin`s natural protection barrier and even affects skin`s natural repairing capabilities.
Fight this: Follow a strict skin cleansing routine with a cleanser and a face wash. Once at home give your skin some breathing space by not applying anything on it post washing.
Sun: The UVA and UVB rays of the sun are major culprits in changing the way your skin looks. The common sun problem is tanning, even the slightest indicates that your skin is under attack. While Indian women are not as prone to sunburn as women of Western countries are but it is a painful skin condition that can really damage the outer layer of your skin. The rays of the sun can actually break down collagen and elastin causing wrinkling and sagging. The skin also tends to get very rough under sun`s harsh rays.
Fight this: Wear a sunscreen with minimum SPF 20, every time you go out in the sun.
Smoking: Smoking is a sure shot way to get wrinkles, large pores and dry skin. It hampers proper circulation of blood and constricts blood vessels, shrinking them. It reduces the flow of oxygen to the skin, which in turn deteriorates collagen formation. Smoking also interferes with skin`s natural defence system against free radicals increasing the risk of some skin cancers.
Fight this: Stop smoking. At least reduce your smoking and take a good multivitamin to fight the after effects.
Stress : Stress related acne and eczema or psoriasis is an oft-heard problem. Besides nervous tension can also lead to excessive sweating, itchy skin and even hives, all big no-nos to get radiant skin. In fact skin starts registering stress even before one realizes. Another common skin problem related to stress is dark circles.
Fight this: Bust stress by taking little breaks in your work and de-stressing. Try some Yoga stretch postures to fight stress.
Sudden dietary changes: You`ll find that fad diets may work on your waistline but you are often stuck with dry patchy skin. While too much fat may not be good, but lack of enough fatty acids in our diet can make skin lose luster faster than you think. Sudden change in diet may also mean that you are not getting enough vitamin and minerals, which lead to extremely dry skin and other problems.
Fight this: Go for a planned diet control with the help of a nutrionist. Make sure to intake fresh fruits and veggies to keep the radiance locked in.
Cold Winter Winds: The dry winter winds can actually draw moisture from your skin. That is why in winter or in cold areas dry flaky skin is the biggest problem. While it is not as bad as the sun, but winter winds can make the skin rough and tight.
Fight this: When going out in the cold weather, moisturise with a heavy cold cream to avoid water loss from skin.
