Give your Pet the Right Care

It is important to choose a pet that is appropriate to the age of your child. You cannot choose a pet that you are fond of!

  • If your baby is under three years old and you already have a pet at home, do not bring in a new one.
  • It will be a great nuisance for you because you will not only have the responsibility of your baby, but also the responsibility of training this pet.
  • Children between the ages of 5 and 10 can handle mice or fish. Kids are at this time old enough to keep the cages clean as long as they are supervised. However, parents should ensure that the pets have enough food and clean water to drink.
  • Children in the age group of 10 to 13 are old enough to handle a dog, a cat or even a rabbit.
  • Children can feed the pet, take the dog for a walk or clean the rabbit cage; even at this age, supervision is needed.
  • For those children who want to go in for pets when they are a little older, say at the age of 14 to 17, parents have to understand that the child will have very little time to devote to the pet and soon they may be managing the pet themselves.

So when choosing a pet, don't rush in where angels fear to tread!
