You come back home from a late shift. The house is in a mess and you are furious. The kids need attention. Whom do you pay attention to first?
- You have been gone all evening and all night. Your kids could have faced a problem.
- Sit down and talk to them while you have your morning coffee or while they are having their breakfast.
- Listen to their day and their problems. You may be irritated and longing to sleep, but they are longing to share.
- Let them share even while you clean the house or lie in bed.
- Ask questions now and then so that your child understands that you have been listening and are not letting your mind wander.
- If they have had a quarrel in school or have had a tough time, be empathetic and hug them, no matter how old they are.
- Load your washing machine as you listen. Make sure that they are always standing in front of you and are able to read the expressions on your face.
- Catch up on your sleep once the kids are out of the house.
