Stroke happens to a person when blood is suddenly stopped from reaching the brain. Thus the ingredients such as oxygen and other nourishments are not transferred to the brain. When a stoke happens the cells of the brain starts to die. Diagnosis of stroke can be done through various techniques such as CAT scan, MRI scan, blood tests, arteriography and Doppler ultrasound.
A person can have stroke when he or she is suffering from hypertension, diabetes and heart diseases. People who are addicted to smoking can also have stroke. They are prone to stoke and are at risk.
CAT scan helps in the diagnosis of stroke. It helps to diagnose hemorrhagic stroke and ischemic stroke. It was also known as EMI scan. It involves the processes and techniques to produce the images of the internal organs of the body. This technique helps to get a three dimensional image of the internal organs of a human body. Various types of modern CT acquisition are available. It includes Axial image, cine acquisition, scout or topogram or pilot image, helical or spiral image and DDR. CAT scan or CT scan is also known as computerized axial tomography. Cat scan or CT scan combine the process of innumerable x-ray images. By the help of computer various cross sectional views of the images are taken if required three dimensional images can also be taken. Th images are recored on a film and the recorded images are called tomogram. This technique is performed so that the internal structures of the body can be analyzed. The different body parts like head, spine can be scanned by this technique. As such no risk is involved in this technique. The patient, who is to undergo CT scan are advised not to take solid food. Contract material is injected into the body of the patient so that the clarity between the internal organs are enhanced.
Magnetic Resonance imaging or MRI scan also helps in the diagnosis of stroke. This technique can be applied to detect both hemorrhagic stroke and ischemic stroke. It helps to provide a detailed view of the body organs. It is a painless technique but is noisy. MRI scan also performs the same function as that of CT scan. However, it has a major advantage. It do not use X-ray radiation. This technique helps to scan each soft tissue and helps to give a clear view of the body organs. For the scan the patient may be asked not to take solid food for about an hour before the scan. However, you can take medicines as you tend to take. Angiogram can also be followed to detect stroke. An ultra sound doppler study helps to detect problems in carotid arteries and precerebral arteries.
Other commonly used techniques which helps in diagnosis of stroke are echocardiogram and electrocardiogram or ECG. Blood tests can also be carried out to determine bleeding diathesis, hypercholesterolemia and some less common causes like homocysteinuria.
