Cancer is a major menace in today's world. Thousands all over the world are falling prey to this disease. A number reasons have been cited. The excessive levels of pollution have caused a depletion in the earth's ozone layer. As a consequence, the harmful ultra violet rays of the sun are reaching the earth and the these have a very harmful impact on the human body. In regions like Australia, a hole has developed in the atmospheric layer, and as a consequence the people who live in this region are at a higher risk of exposure to the harmful rays of the sun.
These ultra violet rays of the sun are responsible for causing harmful diseases like skin cancer. In the United States alone, more than a million people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year. Quite a few of these cases prove to be fatal. Skin cancer is a silent but a serious threat to human life. There are various types of skin cancer.
To explain very simply, cancer is a state of the cells where a certain category of cells start behaving in an abnormal manner. These cells show changes in appearance, and they stop performing their usual functions. These cells multiply at an abnormal rate, and damage the other cells of the body. The natural immune system of the body is unable to prevent this sudden, and abnormal growth. These abnormal cells become so large in number that they start affecting the healthy cells of the body. If cancer is not detected, and treated on time, it may prove to be fatal. Some forms of cancer do not have a cure.
Cancer gives rise to tumors, a tumor is considered benign if the tissues of the tumor do not penetrate into the cells of the surrounding organs and tissues. However, if the tissues of the tumor penetrate into the surrounding organs, or has the potential to spread, then it is considered benign. When the abnormality takes place in the layers of the skin, it is called skin cancer, or skin tumor.
Going back to skin cancer, of the three types of skin cancer, the one that is the rarest type of skin cancer is called Melanoma. It has been observed that most people around the age of fifty and above are more prone to skin cancer.
A number of factors are responsible for the various types of skin cancer. Some types of skin are more prone to skin cancer. Skin types that have a high melanin content are relatively less prone to skin cancer. Some types of skin cancer are also hereditary in nature.
Skin cancer is fatal in quite a few cases, because just like breast cancer, skin cancer is not detected on time. When it is detected, it is usually too late. If detected in its early stages, skin cancer can be treated, and , in most cases, it can be cured.
Basal cell carcinoma (cancer), squamous cell carcinoma, and malignant melanoma are three most talked about types of skin cancer. Basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma or cancer are categorized under the non melanoma types of skin cancer.
