Oily is very common skin type especially in Asian women. Greasy appearance and frequent breakouts are the common downside of oily skin. Oily skin can lead to various problems like enlarged pores, acne and pimple problems, black heads, eczema and dark skin due to excess oil. Over productive sebaceous glands is responsible for oily skin. There are various causes of Oily skin. Some of them are listed below –

  • Heredity
  • Change in hormones
  • Excessive intake of  birth control pills
  • Change in Diet
  • Pregnancy
  • Low quality use of cosmetics
  • Humidity and hot weather conditions
  • Stressful environment

By following steps you can minimize the negative effects of Oily skin –

  • Exfoliate your skin alternatively. Exfoliating will help you to remove dead skin and dirt from your face.
  • Skin care should be a regular affair. Regular cleansing can help you to remove excess oil from the skin. Regular cleaning helps in removal of dead cells, excess oil and dirt that has blocked the pores. Make sure the cleanser you buy should be oil free and appropriate for your skin. Avoid fat enriched beauty soaps. It stimulates intense production of oil by sebaceous gland; as a result, the oiliness of skin increases. The lather should be thoroughly massaged on the forehead, nose and chin area as the T area has maximum concentration of oil. Cleanse at least twice a day.
  • You can use clay and mud mask alternatively after cleansing. Apply an astringent once you are done, this will help in tightening and toning the enlarged pores.
  • Always remove makeup before you go to sleep. Makeup residue can clog your pores and result in pimples and breakout.
  • Wash you face with luke warm water instead of very cold or very hot water. Skin is sensitive to very hot or very cold water. Luke warm water will help you to remove excessive oil from the skin base.
  • Use a mild moisturizer to keep skin hydrated and sooth the skin pores. Never use oily cream as it can clog pores and result in breakouts and acnes.
  • Blotting your face regularly during the day will help you to keep the oil from your T zone down to a minimum. You can use blotting paper or blotting pads to keep away the oil.
  • Follow a healthy diet which includes leafy green vegetables, fresh fruits, and diet rich in proteins. Reduce the amount of salt, sugar and fat in your diet. Avoid pork and fried and highly seasoned foods. Avoid fatty food and junk foods. Avoid excessive soft drinks and alcoholic beverages.
  • Avoid excessive smoking. If you have oily skin excessive smoking can cause breakouts and pimples.
  • Drink lot of water. If you have oily skins try to drink at least 8-10 glasses of water daily. Drinking quality water helps to keep the skin hydrated and flush out toxins from your body.
  • There is no doubt that oily skin attracts more dirt and dust than other skin types. The excess oil and dirt needs to be cleaned more often but the good news is that oily skin is generally slower to show fine lines, wrinkles and discoloration. We surely cannot change our complexion type, but we can learn how to make the best of it.
