Baldness is one of the common skin diseases witnessed in human beings and other species. Commonly, this condition is described as the state in which people lack hair in the areas where it often grows, mainly on the head. Male pattern baldness, medically known as androgenic alopecia, is the most common form of baldness. This basically implies the condition where the thinning of hair occurs in adult males and some other species.

Baldness greatly varies from one range to another such as:
  • Alopecia Areata: Limited hair loss occurrence only from the head portion
  • Alopecia Totalis: Total hair loss
  • Alopecia Universalis: Hair loss from the head as well as the entire body
Baldness depends on generic background and other environmental factors. In males, the hair receding process starts from the lateral side and can be witnessed in males above the age of 25. The bald patch on the top of the head is due to DHT, a sex hormone, facial hair and body growth promoter. Baldness can be caused due to tightly tied hair, childbirth, surgeries, iron deficiency, mycotic infections, thyroid affected patients, skin outgrowths, severe stress and plenty of other reasons. Hence the age-old adage that baldness is inherited is not always the reason. Some other common types of baldness seen in both the gender are Trichotillomania, Traction aloepecia, Alopecia areata, Hyperthyroidism and so forth. The causes behind this baldness are varied and vary from person to person. Loss of hair in the eyebrows, though not that common, is also seen in people. The main causes of this are hormone imbalance, chemotherapy, forms of alopecia and other factors.

The psychological effects of baldness are quite severe. Some individuals adapt to this change smoothly; however, in come cases baldness leads to depression, identity changes, social phobia and also anxiety. Family therapy is one of the best mediums to tackle these psychological problems properly. There are some individuals who perceive baldness as a sign of masculinity and enjoy this change. Companies have made profits out of this baldness related logic by coming up with varied types of products. Though regrowing hair process is not very certain; however, numerous preventing and reversing hair loss remedies have hit the market. Baldness treatments have been tried in different parts of the world since ages.

The two most recognized and FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approved treatments for preventing baldness and reverting hair loss are minoxidil and finasteride. Previously mixoxidil was introduced in the market in the form of tablets for curing high blood pressure. Later it was studied that as a side affect it caused excessive hair growth. After further researchers this technique was used for reversing hair loss and hair loss stabilization. Even the usage of finasteride has shown the increase of hair directly from the base. Some other modern day remedies of baldness are low-level laser therapy, surgery, hair multiplication, exercise, and stress reduction therapy. Without going into depression individuals can try different methods to conceal the baldness and lead a normal life. Wearing hat, hairpiece, or just proper combing can conceal baldness or hair loss to a considerable extent.
