Performance of the Poorer Countries

Until recently, it was the richer countries that won more medals and laurels. But this Olympics has turned the tables on that. Out of the 302 gold medals won at Beijing, only 162 were taken by developed nations or the prosperous ones. At the Sydney Olympics, these nations had picked up 169 gold medals. The UK after making a stupendous effort, won 18 medals at the Olympics. Japan, France and Italy lagged behind considerably. The Chinese outdid the Russians. Something has spurred the Chinese to do it. They wanted to prove that they were their best in their home ground and they wanted to show their home crowd how much they love their country. Indeed, they have done it beyond even their own dreams. This is the kind of achievement one can have in sports when there is no political interference and where coaches choose only those who are capable of performing and winning.
