China, with her 100 medals, has proved to the world that it is not looking at sports as a past time but as a successful vocation. With 100 medals (being surpassed by the US by a mere 10 medals), China has showed to the world that its Project 119 has been a tremendous success. The eight year programme of China was targeted at looking at certain sports that had been ignored by the country till now, bringing them into focus and providing extensive training in them. Teams were either sent abroad or foreign expertise was brought into the country to teach the teams to win. As a matter of fact, there have been 38 foreign coaches and these coaches were instructed to produce champions who could win a gold. It has not been easy for the sportspeople to mould themselves according to the regimen set by the coaches. There have been occasional clashes, but on the whole, both sides have adjusted. The Chinese are already looking forward to the London Olympics and more gold medals. Perhaps they will bring in a sack full.
