An employee of an IT company committed suicide last month and attributed the reason for her extreme action to harassment by senior colleagues. This has shocked IT companies into thinking of ways and means by which women employees can air their grievances without being held to ransom for it. The Supreme Court has issued a directive making it mandatory to set up guidelines to follow up sexual harassment guidelines at the workplace. Employers have been told to set up complaint committees for women.
Committees
The committees are to be headed by women and more than half the members on board must also be women. So that undue pressure does not get put on the person concerned, it has also been decided that one-third of the board will comprise of representatives from an NGO or other orgnisations that are familiar with the issue of sexual harassment. Nasscom has decided to set up a website that will be functional in November where all details regarding sexual harassment issues will be discussed.
