The early Olympic events in Greece did not allow women to participate either as spectators or competitors. A law was decreed that if any woman was found at the Olympic Games, she would be hurled headlong from the Typaeum cliff. The reason for this was that the Greek athletes ran naked because shorts or any other clothing seemed to hinder their speed. But today, women are not only spectators but the winners of a fantastic number of medals, especially at the Beijing Games. On the 12th day of the Olympics, 25 Chinese women had taken 45of the gold medals that the country had won. China has taken advantage of the fact that not many women are open to sports in other countries. They have hit on a wonderful strategy of training their girls and instilling in them the fighter instinct so that they won as many medals as possible for themselves and for the country. Many countries have focussed on women power this year in the Olympics. When is India going to do that?
