Fashion Gurus have come down heavily on India's lack of impact even in the Parade of Nations at the Beijing Olympics. The costumes are being described as dowdy and worse still, the judgement passed is that they looked like losers from the beginning! The US wore their Ralph Lauren uniforms; the Italian team too had the Loro Piana label; the Australians had colourful outfits done by Sportscraft. The Indian contingent's uniform was done by local tailors and shops in 'record time'; this means that no planning had gone into the making of these outfits, whereas actually the country has had four years to pick a top designer and get the show going for the world's most watched event ever! Ritu Beri had been put in charge of designing the uniforms for the last Olympics, but this time no one was contacted! In a country where we have fashion shows at the drop of a hat, this seems a rather strange reaction, doesn't it? We aren't a very professional country, are we? We haven't focussed on producing top athletes and neither have we focussed on impact! Are Indians so lethargic?
