October 15 will be celebrated as Global Hand washing day from this year onwards. It is a campaign that is intended to motivate millions around the world to wash their hands with soap, and for some, it will perhaps be the first time! The initiative was taken at the annual World Water Week 2008 that was held in Stockholm. In more than 30 countries, (which also includes India!) children will be initiated into the hand washing regime which will help prevent the spread of diseases.

Indian Schools

Schools children across the country in India will have a demonstration on how to wash hands and for how long. Children will be introduced to the concept of clean hands keeping away diseases and also told how important it is to wash hands before and after eating food. The campaign is also to introduce awareness of how important it is to wash hands before cooking also. Let’s hope the campaign is more about awareness rather than an advertisement.
