Dial 108 and you are connected to the Emergency Management and Research Institute where a crisp and professional voice picks up within the first ring and responds to your SOS. Calls range from road accidents to incidents related to pregnancy distress, and the officers who pick up the calls are trained to handle them all. The unit, located in Kasturba Gandhi Hospital in Chennai, resembles a BPO since the officers are sitting in small cubicles in front of computers. Their job, however, is very different.
Immediate Response
The officer, who receives the call, takes down the name, number and location of the caller and also the nature of the emergency. The emergencies are related to fire, police or medical and help is dispatched at the click of a button. The unit was started less than two months ago and receives nearly 1,000 calls every day. Road traffic victims, who most of the time are on their own, are admitted to hospitals. There are teething problems, but the dedicated staff will weed them out.
