The Olympics are always known for setting new records and the Beijing Olympics set a number of records, both for the nations participating and the individual sports persons. The games saw the highest number of nations participating ever204! The number of Olympic records set was132! If you look at it, this is more than half the number of nations participating. Does this mean that most nations have super humans in their team? The number of world records is 43 and some came from the least expected quarters and then of course there was Michael Phelps with his historic 8 gold medals! Nations such as Afghanistan, Mauritius, Tajikistan and Togo won their first ever medals in the Beijing Olympics. Bahrain, Mongolia and Panama won their first gold medals. India too set a record for herself by winning 3 medals and sending across a feeling among young sports enthusiasts that they can do it despite lack of training facilities and despite politics.
