1091, the helpline launched for women, has almost become redundant. The helpline was launched to help women in distress. Women police officers had been appointed to take the calls and help these women reach the nearest police station. Unfortunately, owing to the poor response by police officers, women have stopped making calls. Like all other good initiatives, this too has gone down the drain, feel women activists.

Women activists are of the opinion that more human resources should have been pooled in to take care of the complaints. This kind of service needs to be provided 24/7 but that has not been the case. In many cases, male police officers respond to the calls and this makes it difficult for women to tell them what the situation is. Police authorities say that they do take care to cater to the complaints of women who call, and on an average they get about 4 calls a day. What can be done to meet the demands of the situation?
