What does China do that India doesn't? At the Seoul Olympics two decades ago, the country won 28 medals, out of which 5 were gold. At the Beijing Olympics, the country has won 100 medals, out of which 50 are gold! The world is watching open mouthed but India is astounded! What China is doing, unlike India, is focussing on Olympic schools, schools were talent is nurtured and not where politics brews! China has 44,000 special sports schools. 3, 72, 290 students opt for the intensive training. Out of this huge number, 46,758 athletes are chosen and these then start getting paid by the government to become total professionals. There is one professional coach for every two trainees! The athletes who are to perform at the Olympics are weeded out at every stage with great care and with the final goal in mind - that of winning the gold in the event. The total funds allotted for the Beijing team was a whopping $4.8 billion. We surely have a lot to learn about the world of sports, don't we? We are content with cricket and the world cup!
