Computers seem to have different effects on different age groups. A recent study suggests that teens who use computers throughout their growing up phase, run the risk of not developing their social skills. The elderly on the other hand, benefit because of the number of hours they spend with computers! The phrase that Dr. Grey uses to denote those who grew up with computers is digital natives and those who started using the technology in later life are called digital immigrants.

The digital natives are likely to miss out on the non-verbal clues of communication since they will be unable to read between the lines and interpret body language. The best way of striking a balance between technology and social activities is to switch off computers and spend time with people and with the family. Elderly people are reported to have a more active brain when they are doing research on the internet; the brain is even more active than when they are reading! Does this suggest that senior citizens become computer savvy for their own good?
