Australia will start following the system of paid maternity leave to honour women who are taking care of their babies. Under a new act, the primary carer of a baby will receive 18 weeks paid leave at a minimum wage rate. Employers right now give women 12 months of unpaid maternity leave once they have a baby. There is also a proposal to give working mothers a $5,000 payment called the baby bonus. This is probably to encourage working mothers to have babies.

Workplace entitlement

The government has said that this is not a privilege for women but something that they are entitled to, as women and as mothers. The country hopes that in the future the government will be able to give a baby bonus to even mothers who stay at home. What a fatherly government!
