We are the World...

Old Mothers

Women and Anger

Music and Cholesterol
We have women bus drivers and a few women auto drivers, and now Kolkata’s taxi woman, Jasibr Kaur. Jasbir is 48 and a woman of steel. She is the first woman taxi driver of the state and perhaps the only one in the country. Jasbir was forced to take up the profession when her husband became bedridden a few years ago and they found it difficult to rely on other drivers to help them manage their taxi business. This was sometime around 1985, but she says that she had no problems even driving in the night. People neither misbehaved nor insulted her.
The Lioness
The Police Commissioner congratulated her for taking up the vocation and said that she had proved herself a sherni by taking up the profession; he hopes that there would be more like her soon. With his guidance, Jasbir has been able to set up a motor training school so that women can become taxi drivers. Women taxi drivers will definitely be welcomed by those doing late shifts in the BPOs.
