The Right to Livelihood Award is also called the Alternative Nobel Prize. The award has been funded by philanthropist Jakob von Uexkull to honour men and women for their contribution towards humanity. This year sees Amy Goodman winning the award for her radio and television programme Democracy Now for bringing into limelight those voices in democracy that get muted because of the mainstream players. Monika Hauser, gynecologist, also receives the award for helping sexually abused women all over the world.  . More than 70,000 women and girls have been helped by Monika Hauser and her colleagues.

India Too

Asha Hagi, lawmaker in Somali, has been honoured for her effort to promote peace in her country at a great personal risk. Indians, Krishnammal and Sankaralingam Jagannathan have received the award for their effort in promoting social justice through their organisation Land for the Tillers’ Freedom. These awards will be presented at the Swedish Parliamentary two days prior to the Nobel Prizes!
