Wedding in India is different in different parts of the country and the Kashmiri wedding is just one amongst the many Indian wedding rituals and customs, that is followed by the people of Kashmir during the beautiful occasion of marriage. One of the most important Kashmiri wedding rituals and customs is the horoscope matching of the would be bride and groom. Matching the backgrounds, and social status is also one of the important aspects of Kashmiri wedding. Once all these are settled, the marriage date is proposed by the bride’s parents. After agreement from both side, the purohit fixes the date of wedding. Kashmiri wedding can take place either in the morning or night.
In the pre-wedding rituals of the Kashmiri marriage, “Vanna” or a formal commitment of the marriage ceremony is held when the both the families elders agree to the marriage before an idol in a temple which is followed by a sumptuous food by the bride’s family. Then comes the Livun when the house is cleansed and a cook arrives to make food through out the marriage ceremony. On the day of Wanwun music session are held with family and friends. On the maanziraat ceremony the bride is beautified and songs are sung followed by food. On Bariyan flat lentil cakes are cooked. Sending of Thaals is when the bride’s family sends 51 plates of sweets and fruits to the groom's family.
2 days before the Kashmiri wedding, groom's family sends the bride flower jewelry and tinsel. Then there is the Mehendi ritual followed by the Diugun when the bride and groom are bathed and beautified. The next rituals are Sanzvaru, Devgo and finally the dressing of the bride and the bridegroom. Then comes the wedding day when the marriage is performed by a purohit and is followed by post marriage rituals like welcoming of the married couple at the groom’s home, satraat- when the bride returns to her parental home with husband. Then phirlath is held when the couple revisit the bride’s home. Finally it ends with a roth khabar where bride’s family sends cakes to the groom’s family.
