Goanese Wedding is characterized by the jolly environment, merry making, enjoyment and mirth. Most of the Goanese Weddings are Church weddings. Therefore the Goanese Wedding tends to maintain the a diktat of the Catholic Wedding. So, it is quite natural that the Goanese Wedding and its customs and rituals are somehow different from other Indian Wedding Rituals and Customs. Goanese Wedding has charms of its own, that is not going to match with those of others.
Goanese Wedding preparations and arrangements are made a few days before the day of the wedding. One interesting thing about the Goanese Wedding is that the rituals and wedding customs begin much before the day of the wedding. The parents of the bride are supposed to pay some amount of money to the parents of the groom. The family of the bride may have to give some amount of gold to the mother of the groom, if she makes such demand. However this custom resembles very much with the evil social practice of dowry system. Therefore, the youths of today are against this custom. As a result, this ritual of the Goanese Wedding has become extinct.
According to the Goanese Wedding customs, both the bride and the groom have to take bath in coconut water in the night before the day of the wedding. Friends and relatives encircle the bride and the groom and pour the coconut water on them. After that they have their dinner. The interesting thing is that the clothes, that the bride and the groom wore as they took bath, must not be kept. It should be given away to someone.
On the wedding day, in presence of the witnesses from both parties, the bride and the groom declares their desire to marry each other. The groom utters his wedding vows. Then they exchange the rings that are blessed by the priests. Food and drinks are served after their wedding march. At last, the bride departs with the groom in the wedding car after her father hands her over to the groom.
