India which is known worldwide for its diverse and colorful cultures, religions and traditions has its own unique ways of celebrating the big day of wedding. All the four regions of this vibrant country India, be it the east, the west, the north or the south, have their own marriage customs and rituals. In other words, the Indian wedding rituals and customs vary in different religions following different faiths. Many a times, it is seen that the Indian wedding rituals and customs vary even in the same religion but in different regions. Indian marriages are not just for uniting two individuals, celebrating and exchanging rings and vows. Indian weddings also signify the bonding of love, the unison of two souls and also the uniting of families of the bride and the bridegroom, their culture and communities.

Indian wedding rituals and customs are carried through several eventful days. To celebrate this joyous and auspicious occasion, friends and families get together and join in the merrymaking. Someone has said marriages are made in heaven, but it can also be said, that marriages are celebrated in India. The wedding rituals and customs of India reflect the rich cultural admixture and the colorful Indian traditions. Even though the wedding ceremonies are different in different religions and regions of the country, in general, the Indian wedding rituals and customs are divided into the pre wedding ceremony, the main day and the post wedding ceremony.

The mehendi ceremony is one of the basic ceremonies, followed in almost all types of Indian marriages. Even the garland exchanging ceremony is quite common in most of the Indian weddings. Also, one of the most commonly followed thing in the Indian wedding rituals and customs is the building of a wedding altar where the marriage takes place on the main wedding day. However, all rituals are not serious and many fun filled rituals and customs and some frothy moments make the Indian weddings more joyful.
