This Indian musical instrument belongs to the category of Aerophonic Instruments and the music that is created by playing the Shehnai is considered auspicious in marriage ceremonies in India. Often thought to bring good luck, Shehnais are widely used in North India for marriages and processions. Shehnai plays one of the most important parts of any Indian wedding music, be it for a Bengali wedding or a Punjabi wedding. Wedding music adds a special charm to a marriage ceremony and the tunes of a Shehnai heightens the mood of the celebrations.

Some of the famous artists who play the Shehnai are Ali Ahmed Hussain, Ustad Bismillah Khan, Anant Lal, Bageshwari Qamar, Kardir Durvesh and Rajendra Prasanna among several others. Among all these artists the credit for bringing Shehnai on the classical stage goes to Ustad Bismillah Khan. This musical is said to have its origins in Persia and even though a Shehnai is referred to as a double-reeded instrument it is actually a quadruple-reed instrument. A Shehnai is made up of a wooden body with a brass bell and the reed is attached to a brass tube wrapped in string.

In several weddings in India Shehnai is either played as a back ground score or professionals are hired to play Live. The sound of a Shehnai has been intrinsically associated with Indian wedding music since time immemorial. Off late at many a wedding ceremony in India Hindi film music has taken the place of Shehnai and other traditional music. However inspite of all the changes taking place, Shehnai still retains its charm as a wedding music in India.
