An Indian wedding remains incomplete without Mangal Sutra. A mangal sutra is an Indian symbol of Hindu marriage, consisting of a gold ornament strung from a yellow thread, a string of black beads or in the form of a gold chain. It worn by a married woman until her husband's death and its an important part of Wedding Jewelry. According to the rites of Hindu culture, there are five signs of marital status of women. They are mangalsutra, Toe rings, Kumkum, bangles and a Nose ring. Mangalsutra is the most important as it means an auspicious thread or cord. It is known by different names as thaali or thaaly or maangalyam in Kannada, Telugu and Tamil in Southern India. It is believed to have originated in South India and later passed to different parts of North India.


With the passage of time, it’s seen that Mangalsutra is made in numerous designs. When a marriage is arranged in an Indian family, the pattern of this particular Wedding Jewelry is usually chosen by the groom's family according to their customs. According to traditional beliefs, Mangalya dharanam s the most important part of a Hindu marriage ceremony. The mangalya which is the Mangalsutra is strung on a yellow thread prepared by using Turmeric paste. It is tied around the bride's neck with three knots. In some Indian families, the groom ties the first and his sisters tie the rest. Mangalsutra is made of two strings of black beads. Special MangalSutra carries religious importance.

These beads are believed to protect the marriage against evil deeds. Thaali's is available in different shapes and sizes and are used by different communities based on their particular customs. Thaali is a type of MangalSutra which is considered auspicious by the married women as they wear it till their death or their husband's death. Unique MangalSutra designs carry their own significance.
