Marriage is considered a wonderful occasion when two different people come and join together for a lifelong togetherness. Like many other Wedding Traditions in India, the Sikhs are also known for their grand wedding celebration. As Indian Wedding Traditions believes in an elaborate marriage celebration, the Sikhs are no exception. Sikh Wedding Traditions have laid down certain norms which are strictly followed in every marriage ceremonies. The marriage ambiance is being laid few days before the actual wedding ceremony. They are known for outing lot of emphasis on celebrating wedding in a religious fashion.
Since the Shagun or engagement which marks the beginning of the wedding celebration to the end of the real wedding, the Sikh community performs various rituals conforming to their holy rules. On the engagement day various auspicious items like, coconut, dry dates, sugar and money are sent to the groom`s family. According to Sikh Wedding Traditions, the bhaiji or preacher from the Gurudwara should be vested with the responsibility of conducting the marriage process. Bangle ceremony or the choora ceremony is also an important pre-marriage ceremony of Sikh Wedding.
Gana, Vatna, Gharoli are some of the pre-wedding ritual performed by the Sikh community. On the main wedding day Milni ceremony is celebrated at the groom`s place where a sehera or floral veil is tied to the boy`s forehead and a garland of currency notes. Shabads are sung and the ardaas are recited while entering the Gurudwara. In traditional Sikh Wedding, the bride and the groom attend the Guru Granth Sahib Kirtan. It is a main feature of Sikh Wedding Traditions that the groom wears a chunni and walks ahead of the bride with a sword in his hand. The grand feast and the vidaai or doli ceremony mark the end of the wedding. The Sikh wedding is quite an expensive affair which is really worth being a part of it.
