The wonderful city of New York is visited by several tourists from all over the world every year. The city is located on the eastern coast of the United States. New York lies about 1000 miles north of Florida and 200 miles to the southern part of Boston. This wonderfully modern city is situated right at the mouth of the Hudson River and thus can be accessed easily by all. The city is divided into five districts. Each of these districts is called boroughs.
Long Island is a part of New York City and it stretches to almost 100 miles to the eastern part, while the oft-visited state of New Jersey lies just across the famous Hudson River in the western directions.
Affectionately called the "Big Apple" this is the largest city in the entire US boasting of over 7 million residents. The city boasts a diverse mixture of inhabitants. The population of the city includes immigrants from several countries. The city consists of several fascinating neighborhoods that have a specialty of their own. Thus there are places uniquely named as Chinatown, Little Italy, and Spanish Harlem. Each of these places reflects the rich ethnic heritage of the residents' homelands. You can actually feel that you are in an old Chinese city when you step in the Chinatown or feel the colorful essence of Spain itself at the Spanish Harlem.
The Manhattan borough happens to be the business and commercial center of New York City. This place is situated on a large island that lies in the middle of the Hudson River. To the southern part right across the main harbor borough of Staten Island lies a large and popular residential community. The East River branch of the Hudson includes the boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens. Both of them are situated on the western tip of Long Island. The borough of Bronx is right on the mainland to the north and New Jersey lies across the Hudson to the west.
There are three major airports near New York City that immensely help in communication. The John F Kennedy (JFK) airport is situated on Long Island about 12 miles east of Manhattan. The second airport is the LaGuardia in Queens and is about 6 miles from the downtown. The Newark airport is across the Hudson River in New Jersey about 12 miles to the southwest of the city. There is ready access available from each of the airports via taxi or bus. The public transportation is excellent in New York City. Buses, subway trains and taxis provide the most convenient means of transportation. New York City is one of the few cities in the USA with adequate train service. Commuter trains cover most of the nearby communities and neighboring states. Longer distance passenger trains travel the east coast corridor and go to many major cities across the country.
