Benjamin`s life becomes even more complicated as he gets involved in an affair with a much older woman, Mrs. Robinson. She is the wife of his father`s business partner and mother of Elaine, to whom his parents want Benjamin to get married. Benjamin gets deeply involved in this affair, and even humiliates Elaine to avoid her. However, he realizes his mistake and apologizes. Subsequently the two fall in love and Benjamin`s affair with Mrs. Robinson comes to an end.
However, Benjamin`s clandestine affair with Mrs. Robinson gets discovered and his plan of tying the knot to Elaine becomes uncertain. Mr. Robinson bars Benjamin from seeing Elaine any further. Her marriage is fixed elsewhere, but Benjamin does not lose the hope of getting her back in his life.
In the climax scene of `The Graduate` takes place on the wedding day of Elaine. A desperate Benjamin drives and later runs to reach the place of wedding. He screams out Elaine`s name. Elaine runs to him and couple manages to escape in a public bus. The film comes to an end with the two lovers being united.
`The Graduate` not only tuned out to be a commercial success, but also won several awards. Director Mike Nichols won the Best Director award at the Academy Awards. The film won 5 awards at the BAFTA Film Awards including awards for Best Film and Best Direction. The film received many other prestigious awards.
The character of Benjamin was brilliantly portrayed by Dustin Hoffman. Anne Bancroft played the role of Mrs. Robinson, while Katharine Ross was cast for the role of Elaine.
