Story of Sense and Sensibility
The story of Sense and Sensibility is about Mrs Dashwood and her three daughters- Elinor Dashwood, Marianne Dashwood, and Margaret Dashwood. The story is set in 18th-19th century England. The story starts with the death of Mr Dashwood. He leaves the major portion of his estate of Norland Park to his son John Dashwood from his first marriage. Mrs Dashwood and her three daughters can claim a yearly inheritance of only 500 dollars. John's wife Fanny does not like her husband's half sisters living with them. Elinor develops a romantic interest in Fanny's brother, Edward Ferrars when he comes to stay with his sister at Norland Park. This relationship is disapproved by Fanny and her mother.
Later Mrs Dashwood and her three daughters go away from Norland Park and start living in a cottage house in the estate of Devonshire owned by a cousin of Mrs Dashwood, Sir John Middleton. Colonel Brandon is a friend of John Middleton and he lives near the Dashwood cottage. He is an older man who falls in love with Marianne. However, Marianne is in love with John Willoughby.
When John Willoughby makes Brandon's adopted daughter pregnant, his aunt Lady Allen punishes him by disinheriting him. After that incident he goes to London. When Marianne comes to know about Willoughby's conduct her heart is broken. On the other hand, Edward Ferrars has been engaged to Lucy Steele for five years. He met her before he met Elinor. Though he loved Elinor he felt it was his duty to keep his promise of marriage to Lucy. However, this relationship is not approved by Edward's mother and she gives all her property to his younger son, Robert. However, in the end Elinor gets married to Edward, Marianne to John Willoughby and Margaret to Colonel Brandon.
