Story of Father of the Bride - Part I
The story is set in Pasadena in the city of Los Angeles in California. George Banks played by Steve Martin is a the owner of a shoe company dealing with athletic shoes. He belongs to the upper- middle class. He has a 22 year old daughter named Annie, wife Nina and a little son Mattie. The story begins with her daughter arriving home after a long time after earning a degree in architecture. When he comes home eagerly to meet his daughter, Annie gives him the news that she has fallen in love with Bryan and had decided to get married to him. Bryan hails from a rich family living in Bel Air, a posh region in Los Angeles.
George is initially reluctant about the match and is against his daughter marrying a man whom she had known only for 3 months. Above all, he was of the opinion that his daughter was still a young girl and should not get married to Bryan or to anyone. Annie was adamant in marrying in Bryan. Nina was very excited about the idea of her daughter getting married and convinced George that their daughter`s happinesses was with Bryan.
Then starts the arrangement of Annie`s wedding. A wedding planner, Franck played by Martin Scott is hired by the Banks family. George becomes nervous and tensed when a lot of money gets drained away in arranging the lavish wedding for his daughter. The movie shows very beautifully how a father handles the tension of arranging finances for the wedding on one hand and the emotions about accepting the truth that his daughter is getting separated from him- on the other hand. He also gets to realizes she is not a little girl anymore and that she has become a woman.
There are many hilarious moments in the story when George Banks and Nina goes to meet Bryan`s parents at their Bel Air home. George gets chased by dogs into the swimming pool when he snoops around in Bryan`s father`s room. There is a lot of chaos on the wedding day , but everything goes just beautifully and in the end the bride`s father lovingly remembers all the details of this grand event.
The part of the movie when Annie plays a basket ball game with her father at their backyard before the wedding day was very touching. It was the last time she had a conversation with her daddy as his daughter, Annie Banks. The wedding scenes in which Annie moves along the chapel with his father in a lovely flowing white gown and the scene when George gives away Annie to Bryan are very moving. The movie ends with the father of bride sitting on a chair in his house after all the guests have left and his daughter and son in law have gone away on their honeymoon. Finally he gets some moments to grieve over the fact that his daughter has finally been separated from him.
