'Barefoot in the Park' is one of the few Hollywood films that have explored the subtle aspects of marriage in a wonderful manner. This 1967 film is a fine romantic comedy that not only won the hearts of the audiences, but also accolades from the film critics. 'Barefoot in the Park' is a film that film that is worth a watch even today.
'Barefoot in the Park' is a sweet romantic film about a newly wed couple Corie and Paul Bratter. Paul is a conservative young lawyer, while Corie is a cheerful young woman. After their wedding, the couple puts up at a five-flight walk-up apartment in Greenwich Village. It is a small and leaky apartment, which Corie converts into a beautiful little home. The two live happily till their neighbor, Victor Velasco, enters into their lives. He makes friends with Corie and even flirts with her. He also helps Corie in decorating the apartment.
One day Corie arranges for a dinner at the apartment where she invites Victor and her mother Ethel, who lives alone. Corie feels that her mother is lonely and needs love. Hence, Corie makes this plan so as to make her mother fall for Victor. Subsequently Victor takes them all to a restaurant, where Corie and Victor dance together, much to the embarrassment of Paul and Ethel. Corie returns home high in spirit, and gets involved in an argument with Paul over their differences. The adventurous and vivacious Corie feels that the cautious demeanor of Paul does not suit her. She even tells him that he is of the kind who would never go barefoot in the park with her one evening.
The relationship of Paul and Corie turns sour on the following day when Corie kicks him out of the apartment when he returns home with a fever. She then comes to know that her mother has not returned home since the previous night. She finds her mother at Victor's apartment, where she had to spend the night due to an injury.
Meanwhile Paul gets drunk and runs shoeless and barefoot through the Washington Square Park. Corie, who comes searching for him, gets surprised finding her sober husband in such condition. She manages to drag him to the apartment, where after much drama the couple kisses and unites on the roof of the apartment.
The character of Paul was excellently played by Robert Redford, while Jane Fonda won a lot of praise for role of Corie. She got nominations at various prestigious award functions fro here role. Robert Redford was nominated in the 'Male Comedy Performance' category in the Laurel Awards. Mildred Natwick, who played the character of Ethel, was nominated in the 'Best Actress in a Supporting Role' category in the Academy Awards.
Directed by Gene Saks, 'Barefoot in the Park' is a film that is worth several viewing.
