Pardes has a very common Bollywood storyline, yet due to the directorial expertise and the wonderful locations this movie has won huge accolades and was adjudged to be a hit. This movie revolves around an NRI - Kishorilal, who though lives in America, still is rooted deep in Indian tradition and culture. The story goes this way, Ganga is supposedly an Indian girl who lives in a rural village with her Indian conservative family. We see that Kishorilal is one of the oldest friends of Ganga's father Suraj Dev. Kishorilal is a successful business man who lives in America but very committed to his motherland India. When he visits his motherland he meets his old friend and his eldest daughter Ganga, who was the paradigm of Indian culture. Soon he thinks of a perfect match for Kishorilal's American son Rajiv.

The engagement is done in India and then Ganga with her new family leaves for America which is 'Pardes' or another country to her. Ganga was accompanied there by Arjun, the foster son of Kishorilal. He becomes the only and true friend of Ganga in Pardes. Arjun played an important role in winning Ganga's hand for Rajiv in India. When Ganga started getting acquainted with Rajiv, she found a sudden culture shock. She discovers Rajiv to be an absolute spoilt brat who was always engaged in drinking, girls and various other filthy activities.

Compared to Rajiv, Arjun was a simple person and was quite aware of his culture. Eventually Ganga falls in love with Arjun which was not at all a good picture for Kishorilal's family. A certain unwanted incident happened with Ganga that made Arjun come forward to her rescue and protection. On her request Arjun brought her back to India. In the meantime Ganga's father Suraj Dev was wrongly informed about Arjun which forces him to take violent steps against Arjun. However these incidents brought Arjun and Ganga realize their love for each other and they managed to win over their own feelings.

At the end the relationship of Arjun and Ganga was accepted by Kishorilal and Suraj Dev. They both recognized their mistakes and bless the couple whole-heartedly.

'Pardes' therefore with its excellent story was a hit in both India as well as abroad.
