With the screening of Hum Aapke Hain Kaun in the theaters of India, Bollywood wedding movies acquired a new dimension. Sooraj Barjatiya had introduced a new genre of romantic movies with the making of Hum Aapke Hai Kaun. The film was released in the year 1994 and was the biggest blockbuster of the year.
The time when the film hit the theaters, Indian cinema was full of violence. Every film plot had violence as a necessary part of it. But with the release of Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, the scenario changed completely. The audience across the world was introduced to a new kind of family entertainment flicks in which violence had no place.
The film had run successfully in theaters across the country for 52 weeks. The plot of the movie is very simple. Prem (Salman Khan) and Nisha (Madhuri Dixit) fall for each other at the marriage ceremony of Prem's brother and Nisha's sister. With the passage of time and development of plot, the two fell in love with each other.
Their affair remains unknown to both the families except for Nisha's sister. The twist in the tale comes when Nisha's sister passes away after an accident. Nisha's niece is brought to their place for look after. Nisha takes good care of the baby and everyone gets happy about the fact that the baby will not be deprived of mother's love.
The two families plan the wedding of Nisha and Rajesh, Prem's elder brother (Monish Behl). When Prem comes to know about it he sacrifices his love for the happiness of his brother and the family. When Nisha is asked for her consent she readily agrees to the proposal without knowing the truth.
On the wedding day, Nisha comes to know about the reality and sends a letter to Prem through his pet dog. Rajesh gets hold of the letter and finally the two are wedded amidst great joy and celebration. The music of the film was simply amazing.
The melodious tunes of Ram Laxman touched the heart of millions. Songs like Mai ni Mai, Joote do Paise lo, Wah Wah Ramji, and Pehla Pehla Pyaar hai have become all time favorites. The compositions, lyrics, choreography and direction are all world class.
Hum Aapke Hain Kaun is a total entertainment film. Audiences across the world have liked the simplicity of the movie. The romantic cinema in India got a new lease of life after this film. Audiences were made to realize that love stories do not only involve two people, two families are also a part of it.
