Celebrating Father's Day is not one of those to-boost-sales gimmicks by greeting card manufacturers hoping to sell more cards.
As the story goes, it all started when Mrs. John B. Dodd of Washington first proposed the idea of a 'father's day' in 1909. She wanted a special day to honour her father, William Smart, who single-handedly raised six small children as his wife died in childbirth - she wanted to honour his strength and selflessness in raising his children as a single parent. And so the first Father's Day was observed on June 19, 1910 in Spokane Washington. Finally in 1966, President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as Father's Day.
Father's Day has become a day to not only honour your father, but all men who act as a father figure. Stepfathers, uncles, grandfathers, and adult male friends can all be honoured on Father's Day.
