A tribute to momsA mother's relationship with a child is a bond that cannot be fathomed and certainly cannot be replaced with any other. It is a special relationship to which millions of writers and poets have dedicated hundreds of pages. This special bond finds mention in the Bible and many other ancient and holy texts.

Because I feel that, in the Heavens above,
The angels, whispering to one another,
Can find, among their burning terms of love,
None so devotional as that of "Mother,"

- Edgar Allan Poe

In these lines, Edgar Allan Poe, the master of gothic horror, expresses a deep love for a woman who was not really his mother but his wife's. Few people have succeeded in articulating the significance of this deep attachment between a parent and child.

The mother-child bond is a divine bond formed even before a child is born. The love that a mother bestows upon a child ensures that the baby grows up into a secure and happy individual. In fact, research has proved that how far ahead a child gets in life, can also be determined as the child is influenced by its mother early in life. But no amount of research can determine the value of this bond.

This tie binds long after we have outgrown its physical need and continues even after we may have moved thousands of kilometres away. Mother's Day is a time to remember and cherish this relationship. Here is a poem sent in by a reader. It seems like a fitting tribute to all mothers on this special day.

Dear Mom

When I was a little baby,
I messed up your clothes,
I caused you endless worry,
When I tried to eat all the soap.
When I was too little to sit, I tried to dance
And you thought I was having a fit
I got my head stuck in a grill,
When I was looking at a squirrel,
I wanted to run away from home
When I wasn't taken to the beach,
Every morning in the incredible scurry,
You managed to cook for me,
I still blame you all the time
For everything that's wrong,
I don't listen, when you tell me what's right
I like to pretend that I know all that I need,
To tell you the truth,
You're the only one who listens
And the only one who cares.
But that's not why I wrote this poem,
When my best friend's mum died,
I know how much it hurt.
I want to thank you for just being here
I love you mom.
