Times are changing. It has recently been discovered that menopause isn't all woman. Men go through midlife crisis too. It is sometimes referred to as male menopause.
Like women, the male hormones start changing pace too. The levels of male hormones start dropping when a man is past his youth. This causes emotional and physiological changes.
Suddenly men seem to face a lot of discontent and frustration in life. Sexually, they feel inadequate. Their careers don't seem satisfying anymore either.
This is the phase in life where men want their life to completely change directions. They usually want a new job and quite a few men want to change their marital status at this point of time.
The hormonal changes cause depression that is often acute. They feel anxious about lost youth and feel less virile. Their feelings of incompetence often reflect on their relationships with their families.
Male menopause is what is aptly known as 'reverse puberty'. All men go through it to some degree. The symptoms are more predominant in some of them.
It has been found that there are striking differences and similarities between a woman's menopause and that of a man. Hot flashes are common with women, but men aren't totally immune to it. There have been recorded cases of men sweating profusely and suddenly. Depression and anxiety are common symptoms of both sexes. There is a general decrease in the feeling of well-being.
Research shows that lower levels of male hormones may cause a decrease in the sex drive. It also adds to weight gain. But hormone replacement therapy is not the answer to the male midlife crisis. This may put a man to higher risk of prostate cancer.
What men can be treated for, is depression. And getting involved with a support group is equally important. Basically, men need to change their attitude and prepare themselves for the second half of life.
The key point is that men, like women, need to look ahead in life, instead of constantly looking back.
