It has been observed that men have a mental block when it comes to personal health care. From early childhood they have been indirectly conditioned to deny pain. They do not consider themselves vulnerable in any way. It`s all a part of being a tough guy putting up a brave front. Maybe that`s the reason why most men predecease their wives or sisters.
It`s never easy to convince a grown man to be concerned about his health. Preventive care with men is an absolute no no. However modern medical opinion recommends periodic health check. Detecting a disease in its early stage and nipping it in the bud is a good way to beat it. The best way to treat it. Yet most men fight shy of even going through a basic health check up, which could make all the difference to their life and longevity.
One of the main diseases men need to be careful about is prostate cancer. Every man over the age of forty years needs to be tested annually. He needs to get his PSA levels tested.
Incidence of prostate cancer has increased by 192% between 1973 and 1992. One in every six men is at a life time risk of contracting this disease. If a close relative has the disease, then the man is doubly at risk. With more close relatives having had prostate cancer, his risk increases manifold. Just as women need to watch out for breast cancer, so do men need to guard against prostate cancer.
So it is imperative for every man to undergo the PSA test regularly. Prostate cancer is curable in the early stages. But if left undetected, it could spread to the bone and then to other parts of the body.
What are the other various disorders men really need to watch out for? Studies show that most men are prone to heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes. These are also the main causes of death in men and all of them are partly or entirely preventable. Men only need to make a few lifestyle modifications. And maybe they need a little feminine help and motivation!
It is well known that married men usually live longer than bachelors, partly because they have a woman caring for them. Women try to be better informed when it comes to health care. They ask more questions and do a lot to help carry out the doctor`s instructions.
