So what were the no-no's? Mostly, perfumes and after shaves. Reason? Unless you are sure of the person's signature perfume, don't waste money on it, they advised.

Books on self-improvement, stress management, time management … These seem to be hints of some kind and not exactly complimentary was the opinion.

Digital or electronic equipment, most said , should be discussed and planned before purchase. Not sprung as a surprise, because, ( ahem) they know better!

Pre-recorded cassettes were not a hot favourite.
