Set a date. Let your child choose the events that are most important to her and then prioritise. Explain that if your attend one thing, you may not be able to attend another. It's important for kids to understand that parents have responsibilities that aren't child-related.

Find a substitute. Ideally, you'll be able to find another adult to take your place - your spouse, a close family friend or a grandparent. Ask that person to take pictures or videotape the event so that you can experience it later with your child.

Check in. Call your child immediately after the event to hear the details, and talk to your substitute or another parent to find out how it all went.

Be a part of it. Do something connected to the event to show it matters to you. Make costumes for the school play. Tuck a note of encouragement in your child's equipment bag before a game, or go out for an ice cream as a post-game celebration.
