Relationships are of different hues and kinds. Each is different and the equations of each differ. Pa rents, siblings, friends, teachers, professors, classmates, boyfriends and girlfriends are some of the relationships we all go through in life. How to keep all of these healthy?
Keeping expectations low and realistic
It is important to understand that not everyone will turn out to be exactly as you would have wanted them to be. It may be that you get disappointed sometimes because of what you had built up in your mind. Remember that it is healthy to accept people as they are and not to try to change them.
Communicating and talking to each other
Importance of communication cannot be stressed enough for any relationship to be healthy. Learn to be there for each other. Listen when the other is talking and try not to interrupt. Ask questions and clear all doubts. Find out the other person's opinion and show interest in what he/she is saying. Genuinely.
Learning to share information
Do not be secretive and uncommunicative. This is important for a relationship to be on a healthy level. Give of yourself unstinting ly and be generous in sharing yourself.
Being flexible
Never try to keep people under your control, trying to make them become what you want them to be. Instead, learn to let them be even if you are not ready for any change they might manifest. This is a true mark of a healthy relationship.
Taking care of yourself
In your eagerness to please people around you, don't ever neglect taking care of yourself. First please yourself and remember that a healthy relationship is always mutual.
Being there for each other
Never make promises that you cannot keep. Follow through every plan, meet deadlines, accept responsibilities and keep your relationship trustworthy to keep it healthy.
Fighting fair
Any normal relationship will have its ups and downs. There may be occasional conflict and disagreement. But this does not mean you no longer like each other. Solve the problem by discussing and talking about it by not being critical of each other, by not assigning hidden motives, by saying 'sorry' and meaning it when you know you are in the wrong, by not assuming things, by not holding a grudge and by asking for help when you need it. Sometimes you may have to com promise and agree to disagree about certain things in order for the relationship to be healthy.
Showing warmth
Warmth is an important ingredient of any healthy relationship. Warm people are highly appreciated and valued as emotional warmth is very important to sustain a healthy relationship.
Just being yourself
Always be yourself. Never pretend to be what you are not. People appreciate honesty in any healthy relationship.
