The institution of marriage is becoming less popular among the young generation. This trend has been in the making for the last few decades. The number of people preferring to get married is an indicator to the stability of relationships in a society. This seems to have taken a permanent tumble. An increasing number of people are living-in with their partners out of wedlock. It has become an immensely popular trend. People are dodging the institution of marriage for a number of reasons. This new phenomenon has its fair share of pros and cons. Live-in relationship has become a double-edged sword of sorts for the young generation.

Live-in relationship is sort of cohabitation where partners from the opposite sex reside under the same roof. This type of cohabitation has moved on from being a taboo in most societies. However, most conservative establishments do not consider it an alternative to the institution of marriage. However, its growing popularity has forced many to give it thorough consideration. Debates are raging on about the effects of the live-in relationship on the young generation.

The main benefit that makes a live-in relationship attractive to most is the freedom. The partners are under no obligations and can live their lives without making any serious commitments. Live-in partners carry less responsibility on their shoulders because of lack of commitment in this type of relationship. They do not need to become responsible family person. Dissolving marriages can be an extremely lengthy procedure and can be costly. Live-in relationships offer a less expensive alternative because it is not a formal arrangement. Married couples need to divide both their assets and debts equally. They also need to make suitable arrangements for their children.

Cohabiting partners are under no such obligations and can easily call off their relationship. Many couples also view live-in relationship as a sort of dress rehearsal to their married life. They use this time to know each other better and check whether they are compatible or not.  This sort of relationship is a dream come true for many where they can have a physical relationship, and then move out at their will. They need not face any legal hassles or financial complications.

Those were the pros of live-in relationships. However, they have quite a few cons going against them, as well. Marriage offers social and legal recognition. The live-in partners do not possess clearly stated laws and rights that they can invoke in the hour of need. Marriages are not fragile like live-in relations and provide a sense of security to both the partners. Marriage also provides emotional support to the relation. Wedded couples make commitments that they expect would last a lifetime.

Marriage provides an environment that is conducive to children development. Children born out of wedlock often suffer from identity crisis. They may also become detached from a proper family life. Live-in relations also report an increased proportion of sexual and physical abuse. Live-in relationships have become preferable among many young couples. However, time has come for detailed study on their effects on the modern society.
