Should a woman use her maiden name even after getting married? Well, this is an extremely touchy subject where different people can have different views. In fact, there are various options as well which can be helpful for a woman to come out of this dilemma. Some of them are listed as follows:
Keep the Maiden Name: Having said this, there are many people who will raise the question against this for sure. If you are a person who has strong beliefs in past culture and religion then you will never agreed to this. But, there are many people who have accepted this with open arms; today many women have not changed her maiden name. Moreover, if the wavelength of emotions and thinking are on the same scale of a husband and wife then the name does not play any role in their lives. Their lives are much better than the couple who keeps on fighting time and again even when the wife has sacrificed her maiden name just to lead a happy life with her husband. Anyways, let’s proceed towards the other available options.
Take the last name of Husband: When a woman is married she takes the last name of her husband as a traditional culture. This again depends on the mutual understanding of husband and wife. If they both mutually agreed then the wife can use her last name as well as the husband last name or else she can only use the last name of her husband. But, whatever the decision is, it should be made with their mutual understanding otherwise, it may lead to various conflicts between them. There are some people who consider this as the love shown by wife towards her husband by accepting his last name.
Hyphenated last name: Some of you might not have heard this term ever before. But in this option, both husband and wife change their last name to a name which is the combination of woman’s last name and the husband’s last name. This is the option which is being followed by many couples of today’s generation. It is flexible and fair that both man and woman will change their name after getting married. In this case, there may be some confusion at the time of giving the name to their child. So, these things should be sorted out well in advance. Both husband and wife should sit together and discuss this topic, probably before getting married. If they have not been able to come up with any decision then the advice from some of the senior members of their family should also be considered. Since, it is a sensitive and critical option there are more chances of having the loop holes and one needs to be careful before going for this option.
