Gifted Children

At the other end of the scale are those children who may score high marks in the exams, ask a lot of questions, give unusual answers, be good at some specific talent or skill. Some may be brilliant and good at academic achievement. Others may be creative, good at coming up with new and novel ideas but not necessarily good at passing exams and getting good marks. Different labels such as gifted children, creative children, etc., refer to such children.

Characteristics:

Here is a list of the characteristics of the gifted child. Check out if your child is one among them:

  • Learns rapidly and easily.
  • Thinks clearly, reasons out fast, comprehends easily.
  • Has good memory.
  • Answers or responds quickly.
  • Asks many inquisitive questions.
  • Is very observant.
  • Reads and learns more than her average level.
  • Is sensitive to problems and looks for solutions.
  • Has very good attention span and concentration.
  • Comes up with crazy or creative solutions.
  • Has good imagination.

Problems of gifted children:

  • Due to the encouragement and praise from all quarters, gifted children often develop superiority complex.
  • Some of them may have adjustment problems and may feel isolated.
  • Classwork may seem too easy and boring to them. So, they may resort to day dreaming.
  • They may be pressurised to perform due to their families high expectations of them.
  • Sometimes teachers and parents may find their constant questioning irritating.
  • They may sometimes feel that sufficient opportunities are not being provided to them.

Methods of promoting giftedness and creativity:

Guiding children with special abilities and promoting their giftedness is one of the greatest challenges that teachers and parents are faced with. Here are some of the ways to promote giftedness in your child:

  • Give her reference books and other enrichment material.
  • Provide her with every opportunity possible to keep her enthusiasm and interest alive.
  • Give her games, riddles, puzzles and activities to stimulate her thinking.
  • Ask her hypothetical, problem-solving questions to enhance her creativity and imagination.
