Tina is a young and bubbly teenager but still she is quite different from many girls of her age. She is pregnant. She too, is a part of the ever expanding pregnant teens around the globe. The term, ‘Teen Pregnancy’ refers to a pregnant female who is under the age of 20 years (after pregnancy ends). According to research reports, more than a million pregnant teens are in the United States alone and this number is rising fast. Such pregnancies usually occur at the time of puberty that is usually when the female is of 12 or 13 years and many times after the menstruation starts.Motherhood is regarded as the most valuable and sweet experience that a girl can have. In fact, it is even said that motherhood only completes a woman but this experience can scare us too, especially when we are talking of young girls still in their school dresses or polka dot frocks. What is the reason of rising teen pregnancies? Is it sexual abuse, rape or a girl’s own will to ‘complete’ herself?
There are various other reasons for it too. In developing countries, lack of education of low levels of education, lack of appropriate socio-economic factors and high poverty levels lead to girls taking on to motherhood still in their teenage years. Another significant factor that cannot be over looked is sexual abuse of minor girls. In many countries, minors can be legally married off to much older men while in many countries, a lack of law and order leads to millions of girls becoming pregnant after rapes and assault.
If a problem exists, there must be a way to deal with it also. There are various ways to tackle this issue. The first and the foremost is proper and adequate parental care. A teenage girl who is yet to come to terms with pregnancy requires not only good care but psychological support as well in which her parents play a pivotal role. If the pregnancy has resulted from a rape, legal action must be taken against the accused. Visiting a good gynecologist always helps. Teen gets to know about the things going on with her and the changes that will soon take place in her body.
There are various NGO’s (Non Government Organizations) that offer advice on dealing with such situations. Contacting them is a good idea.
Another good option is abortion. However, if pregnancy cannot be terminated for any reason, the infant can be put up for adoption. There are various countries where this option is available.
Society and friends too, play a very important role. Instead of pointing out problems that come with pregnancy, it is always better to manage the situation. Making allegations and commenting on teen’s character is always damaging for her psyche and is not correct either. After all, the partner of the teen was equally responsible. Love, care, guidance and support can heal any would and can pull her out of the mess.
