Effects of Abortion on Women

Abortion is probably the most difficult decision a woman has to make. The reason for facing this difficult situation could be anything ranging from premarital pregnancy to a fatal threat to mother. According to a survey, approximately 35 million abortions are performed each year globally out of which more than 50% are illegal and carried out by untrained people in facilities that aren`t hygienic resulting in further complications.

In the first three months of pregnancy, abortion is performed by two methods: evacuation of uterus following cervical dilatation and Menstrual Aspiration (MR). Taking drugs is the most common and cheaper way of aborting a baby. These drugs can either be consumed or taken intravenously/vaginally. The risks associated with these methods are nausea, diarrhea, cramps, irregular mensuration and heavy bleeding.

An abortion scheduled in the second trimester of pregnancy requires medical attention and must be performed by a qualified gynecologist. Aspirotomy, Hysterotomy and Hysterectomy are the three surgical procedures that require anesthesia injections. The associated risks are cervical infection, irregularity of mensuration, increased bleeding and nausea.

Although these methods are considered safe, the aftermath of terminating a pregnancy can be extremely dangerous and in many cases, fatal. In worst cases, following side effects can occur:

  1. Tearing of cervix which requires stitches to be fixed.

  2. Requirement of blood transfusion as a result of excessive bleeding.

  3. Unsuccessful abortion which calls for the need for repetition of the process.

  4. Ectopic pregnancy which if not cured in time may lead to bleeding to death.

  5. Sever infection in Fallopian tube and womb.

  6. 10% increase in miscarriages during later pregnancies.

  7. Perforation of the Uterus resulting in peritonitis and ruptured appendix.

  8. Increased risk of becoming sterile due to Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID).

Abortion is a rough patch that may affect the mental health of a woman that`s why many medical facilities offer counseling. The doctors inform the patient about the different kinds of procedures, probable risks and effective birth controls to prevent future unplanned pregnancy. From providing assistance to her in taking the decision to comforting her post surgery, doctors lend a helping hand to every woman so that she doesn`t enter the pit of guilt and regret.

After termination of pregnancy, it is likely for a woman to condemn herself and feel anguished. These feelings lead her to a state of hyper depression wherein she has thoughts of committing suicide. It is important for close friends and family members to relieve the patient and help her overcome the deep anguish.
