Try music

Hey Mom - do you have trouble getting your kid to obey orders? Or even follow routine? A bit of music can help get him focussed. Try it.

Make up a simple song, with easy instructions as lyrics. As a child learns the song and understands it, he will find it easy to follow the instructions in the songs.

"This is the way we brush our teeth, brush our teeth, brush our teeth...". These lyrics followed by other routine instructions, will help a child learn to get dressed by himself and follow a simple routine like getting ready for school on his own.

Music comes naturally to children. It helps them obey orders.

To children, doing what the song dictates is fun. They don't look on it as duty or chores. Instructions and directions given by adults very often overwhelm a child.

Music on the other hand, is fun and less inhibited. It comes in very useful especially during a transition period. Songs help a child understand better that there is a routine to be followed.

It is important that the song is a fun one, even though it holds simple instructions. Sing the song a few times, with all the actions that the lyrics talk about. (for eg. Bend down and wear your shoes - if the lyrics say its time to wear shoes). The child soon forms an association between the song and the actions. A routine is soon set.

Music helps a child develop a receptive aptitude. He learns to listen to the words and follow instructions. And the best part of it is he thinks its fun.

He might soon even learn to make up his own songs to suit his actions!
